Scott Luker Encouraged Special Needs Youth To Join The Challenger Baseball Program

Scott Luker is the Director of Jefferson Challenger League, a league that organizes a variety of sports activities and many other events. The Jefferson Township Recreation Department commenced its baseball Little League Challenger Division for the special needs children again this spring following numerous successful programs since 2007. Registration for the program is open for all, and its fee includes a cap, jersey, and an award for the Spring 2015 team has been waived owing to fundraiser effort. Registration forms to manage, assistant coach, umpire, play, become a “buddy” to a player, or to work as a team parent are also available at the Jefferson Township Recreation office situated at Camp Jefferson, 81 Weldon Road in the lobby brochure counters at the Jefferson Township Municipal Building and Public Library.

Scott Luker describes that in the year 1989, the Challenger Division was established as a separate division of Little League Baseball to allow girls and boys with mental and physical disabilities to enjoy the baseball together with the millions of other children who take part in this sport across the globe. Girls and boys with ages 5 to 18 or those who are about to complete their high school, and are with mental or physical challenges are welcomed to participate in baseball. Over the years, this Division has withdrawn the barriers, which keep kids off the baseball field and are treated as other children. The participants have the chance to participate in Coach Pitch, Player Pitch, or Tee Ball levels with the alternative to utilize the buddy system to help on the field.

They wear similar uniforms and utilize the same equipment like other little players on the roster play the whole game, and no score is kept for them. Scott Luker says that this program provides a new avenue of socialization for them.
